By Kalista Pepper, Donor Relations and Development Coordinator
Ali Sozeri, an alumnus of the Miller School of Albemarle, has recently made his mark in the world of soccer management. He has been named the Manager of Soccer Operations for Valour FC in the Canadian Premier League. Ali's journey exemplifies the transformative impact of a Miller education.
From Miller School to Soccer Success
Ali journeyed to Miller from Turkey his junior year. Coming from the cities of Europe to mountainous Charlottesville, Virginia was a big change, one he is reflectively quite grateful for. A quiet and spacious landscape for learning, the solitude of the mountains allowed him time to figure out who he wanted to be as a growing young man. “It’s easy to get caught up in cities,” he says. The boarding experience allowed him the downtime he didn’t know he needed to dwell on his thoughts and focus on what he wanted after Miller.
Ali's journey began at Miller, where he graduated before pursuing further studies at Boston University. While at Miller, Ali was not only a dedicated student but also a talented athlete. Initially a basketball player, he seized the opportunity to also play soccer when encouraged by Mr. Macdonald, who was the coach at the time.
Reflecting on his time at Miller, Ali fondly recalls the supportive environment that helped shape his character. He credits teachers like Tom Pallante and Hugh Meagher for their guidance, both academically and personally. Miller provided him with the space and encouragement to explore his interests and aspirations, laying the foundation for his future endeavors.
Proud to be a Maverick
One of the most striking aspects of Ali's experience at Miller was the diverse student body. Despite coming from different backgrounds, Ali notes that everyone at Miller was treated as equals—a testament to the school's inclusive culture. This environment, he believes, played a significant role in shaping the success of Miller alumni in various fields post-graduation. Students and the lives they move on to live are a testament to the value of an institution and Ali considers his peers and the alumni network to be a testament of the Miller School’s value.
After Miller, Ali pursued a career in soccer management, drawing on his passion for the sport and the skills he developed at Miller. His journey took him to Canada, where he immersed himself in the soccer community, holding roles with clubs like Simcoe County Rovers, Aurora FC, and Vaughan Soccer Club.
A New Chapter with Valour FC
Ali's latest achievement is his appointment as Manager of Soccer Operations for Valour FC. Joining the Canadian Premier League side represents a significant milestone in his career, allowing him to contribute his expertise to the success and growth of the organization.
With his experience and passion for the sport, Ali is positioned to make an impact on Valour FC and the Canadian soccer scene.
As Ali continues to excel in his career, the Miller School community celebrates his achievements and wishes him continued success on his journey.
