MSA senior Sophia McClung received a $7,000 Emily Couric Leadership Scholarship. Sophia was one of ten seniors in the Charlottesville area recognized with this prestigious local award, which aims to empower the next generation of women leaders who bring positive change to the world.

Director of College Placement, Hugh Meagher, commented: “Sophia McClung is focused, ambitious, and goal oriented. Sophia left her home in the Cayman Islands and came to the Miller School of Albemarle in the fall of her junior year. Here at Miller she has flourished.”

At MSA, Sophia is involved a range of leadership roles. She is a member of the student run Honor and Discipline Review Board. This board handles all student breeches of both the Honor and Disciplinary Codes of Conduct. Additionally, she was selected as a Resident Advisor in the girls dormitory. During the 2019-20 school year, Sophia volunteered at Innisfree Village as a service group leader. She gives back to her school community as a Student Ambassador for our Admissions department. Furthermore, Sophia is a talented musician and has performed for the MSA community at a variety of events.

The Emily Couric Leadership Forum was established to honor Virginia State Senator Emily Couric’s legacy. A two-term Virginia State Senator, Couric had just embarked upon a statewide campaign for Lieutenant Governor when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, to which she eventually succumbed. While undergoing treatment for her disease, she continued representing her constituents in the 25th District and was elected to serve as General Chair of the Democratic Party in Virginia.
