Peter Hufnagel has been teaching English and coaching at Miller School of Albemarle since 2005. He has served as Dean of Faculty, Director of Discipline, Director of Special Programs, and English Department Chair. Before joining the MSA faculty, Hufnagel earned his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Virginia, where he studied English Literature as a Bradley Fellow. While at UVA, Hufnagel raced for the cycling team, and in 2005 he won both the ACC Cycling Road Race Championship and the ACC Team Time Trial Championship. Since graduating, Hufnagel has continued to pursue both academics and athletics.

He has had essays published in Studies in the Novel, Forum for World Literature Studies, the Norton Critical Edition of The Time Machine, Philosophy of the Olympics, and Libertarian Literary and Media Criticism: Essays in Memory of Paul A. Cantor. In addition, he gave a paper at the annual Renaissance Prose Conference at Purdue University in 2009 and spoke as a panelist on Shakespeare’s Roman plays at the University of Richmond’s Jepson School of Leadership. In 2015, he gave a paper on Dante's Inferno at the University of Virginia's Center for the Liberal Arts. He is the creator and curator of the digital archive for the work of literary and media critic Paul A. Cantor.

In athletics, Hufnagel continues to pursue road cycling, mountain biking, and triathlon at an elite level. He has raced in the professional field at the LifeTime Fitness Leadville 100 MTB Race and has won the Charlottesville Olympic Distance, Sprint, and Xterra Triathlons. He holds a UCI Professional license in cross-country mountain biking.

While Chair of the MSA English Department, Hufnagel authored the school’s writing manual and founded the school’s Writing Center. As a coach, he has been VIC Coach of the Year in cross-country running. He is the founder of the Virginia Interscholastic Cycling League, VAHS MTB Series, and Miller School of Albemarle Endurance Team. He has been featured in USA Today, C’Ville Weekly, VeloNews, Virginia Sportsman, and Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine. As a result of his work with youth and sports, Hufnagel was invited to the White House to discuss with the Obama administration initiatives to engage youth in outdoor activity and physical fitness.

Hufnagel lives on campus with his wife Fashaya and their four dogs.
