Be a Maverick…and a Red Devil
It has been twenty years since our Red Devils baseball team made history with its first VISAA State Championship. At the time, Miller School’s mascot was the Red Devil, and the school colors were maroon and gray. While maroon remains a secondary color in honor of that era, it has been nearly two decades since a Miller team has taken the field in a maroon jersey.
The significance of that 2006 season still resonates. Reflecting on the team, then Head of School Lindsay Barnes recalled a group that improved steadily under head coach Sam Beale before finding its stride when it mattered most. The Red Devils “caught fire” as the state tournament began, ultimately securing the championship with a tense 2–1 victory. The title marked a remarkable arc for the program, which had gone winless just a few seasons earlier.
Barnes also pointed to the community that helped make the run possible, from early home games on the Cove Creek diamond made available through the generosity of John Grisham, to later contests on Farina Field, built through the support of the LaRocca family and the work of Dave Fortier and his crew. Many players, he noted, had first developed their love for the game as members of Miller School’s L’il Devils lower school teams. Together, the 2006 varsity squad reflected what can be achieved over time through hard work, dedication, and good sportsmanship.
This spring, that legacy will be honored with a limited-edition throwback jersey designed by Head Baseball Coach Billy Wagner. The team will wear the maroon Red Devil jersey on April 11 at Farina Field during the Spring Sports Reunion.
Alumni, families, and fans are invited to be part of the celebration by ordering their own Maroon Red Devil Team Jersey (#78). Wear it during the reunion as you cheer on today’s Mavericks and reconnect with members of the historic 2006 team. It promises to be a meaningful day on the Hill.
