Miller School Hosts Virginia Historic Garden Week
Miller School welcomes visitors for Historic Garden Week.
This past Sunday, the Miller School of Albemarle hosted visitors from across the country as part of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week, marking the school's debut in this longstanding tradition. The event showcased Miller School’s unique blend of history, sustainability, and student leadership, as guests toured the 1,100-acre campus and learned about the school's historic buildings, agricultural roots, and modern and innovative educational programs.
Students played a central role in the day’s success. Visitors enjoyed purchasing bird nesting balls and seed kits crafted by student entrepreneurs and toured the school’s thriving animal husbandry program, which included a special visit with baby lambs. Members of the History and Archive Club also contributed by researching Miller’s agricultural past and preparing the historical notes used by volunteer docents throughout the day.
“Our students embraced the opportunity to share the story of Miller School’s founding mission and our ongoing commitment to hands-on, experiential education,” said Michael Drude, Head of School. “It was a joy to see them welcome guests and demonstrate what makes our community so special.”
The sustainable agriculture program, revived in 2020, was a highlight for many visitors. Guests learned about the school's commitment to gardening, bee-keeping, and animal husbandry—all part of an educational model that honors Samuel Miller’s vision of combining academic study with practical, real-world skills.
The Miller School was honored to be one of three destinations featured in the Western Albemarle tour. Guests enjoyed sunny skies, scenic grounds, and lively conversations throughout the day, with shuttles transporting visitors between the three properties.
We are grateful to the Rivanna Garden Club, Charlottesville Garden Club, and Albemarle Garden Club for their support and organization, as well as to all the guests who made our debut in Historic Garden Week so memorable. Hosting the event was a wonderful opportunity to share Miller School’s story with new friends and old—and to celebrate our living tradition of growth, stewardship, and community.
