Continuing to Build

In most cases, when students complete the coursework for a class at the end of the school year, they put their books and supplies away and shift their attention to other hobbies and activities. For MSA Design/Build student Keaton Howard, the completion of his class requirements this spring served as a launching pad for personal projects to serve his community. Keaton has recently utilized his woodworking skills to build benches and flowerbeds to donate locally.

He’s learning, he’s building things with his hands, the projects provide a useful function, and on top of it is the community service aspect.  He says he’s doing it for my class, but this is all him.  It’s his idea, his time, his initiative.

Design/Build teacher, Al Hanson, commented: “This is an outstanding project.  He's learning, he's building things with his hands, the projects provide a useful function, and on top of it is the community service aspect.  He says he's doing it for my class, but this is all him.  It's his idea, his time, his initiative.  He completed the requirements for my class a while ago, but he's still doing it!”

Over the past few years, Keaton has become one of the school’s master woodworkers. While he doesn’t have the specialty tools required for more advanced projects at home, he has found a way to create something special this spring—both in terms of his work and his work ethic.
