Life Moves Pretty Fast

Dr. Hugh Meagher gives some words of wisdom to the class of 2026.

The Class of 2026 marked a milestone on the Hill with its “Last First Day” celebration, gathering with families and friends in the warm setting of Old Main’s dining hall. What began in 2019 as a simple dinner has quickly become one of Miller School’s most beloved senior traditions—a chance to pause, share a meal, and reflect before the whirlwind of the academic year begins.

This year’s gathering carried both nostalgia and excitement, as students looked back on their journey while also looking ahead to the opportunities that await.

In his remarks, Head of School Michael Drude reminded seniors to savor each moment, quoting one of his favorite 1980s films, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” His words resonated as a fitting send-off into a year that promises both challenges and celebration—one last lap around the Hill for the Class of 2026.

As Miller School approaches its 150th anniversary, traditions like the Last First Day not only honor the passage of time but also connect the present generation of Mavericks to a legacy that continues to grow stronger with each new class.
