Back-2-Back State Champions
With only a few minutes left on the clock, the boys’ basketball team was holding onto its season-long goal of winning a second straight VISAA State Championship by a thread. Peninsula Catholic came out firing, seizing an early lead and maintaining control for most of the game. But in the closing minutes, MSA’s sharpshooter from beyond the arc, Ryan Crotty, assisted by Jordan Hairston, buried a clutch three-pointer to narrow the deficit to a single point. Moments later, Anthony Saunders drove through the lane for a decisive layup, putting the Mavericks ahead. He sealed the victory at the free-throw line, sinking both shots to secure the win and the State Championship.
The Mavericks had set their sights on back-to-back titles, and they delivered in a true team effort. Anthony Saunders led the way with 16 points and a crucial steal. Ryan Crotty added 12 points, pulled down 13 rebounds, and dished out two assists.
Coach Jack Meriwether reflected on the game: “We really thought we could wear Peninsula out, and that’s tough to do in a championship when everyone is leaving everything on the floor. But they kept fighting. We had to make adjustments, put guys in spots they don’t normally play, and just keep our foot on the gas. Thankfully, in the end, we found a way to get it done.”
The championship capped off an already stellar season for the Mavericks. They finished as the top team in the BRAC after regular season play, and Coach Meriwether earned BRAC Coach of the Year honors. Several players have signed to play college basketball at top programs across the country.
Beyond the trophies and accolades, the season brought Alumni Gym to life. Whether playing on the court or rallying in the crowd, the energy and pride of the Maverick community made this winter one to remember.
