A Maverick Behind the Arc
Ryan Crotty: A Maverick Beyond the Arc
In the 2024 season, Ryan Crotty made history in Virginia basketball by setting a new record for three-point field goals in a single season, across both public and private schools. His performance played a key role in leading the Mavericks to win the VISAA Division II State Championship and the BRAC Championship.
As Miller School of Albemarle’s top shooter, Ryan now holds records for the most three-pointers in a season at MSA, BRAC, VISAA, and Virginia high schools.
Heading into his senior year, Crotty is one of the most highly recruited high school players in the nation. He was named to the Nike Elite Basketball First Team and was MVP at several summer camps. Some sports reporters and scouts have called him the "best shooter in the country." Colleges and universities like Harvard, the University of Miami, Clemson, Oklahoma State, and Virginia Tech are eager to have him join their teams in the fall of 2025.
Ryan’s strengths go beyond basketball. He is a committed student, excelling academically while pursuing his athletic goals. MSA’s Director of Academics, Mary Jo Burke, remarked, “Ryan was nearly a straight-A student during his junior year, excelling in several AP classes. His senior year schedule includes more AP courses and at least one dual enrollment class. Teachers consistently praised him as insightful, conscientious, and dedicated in his studies.”
Coach Jack Meriwether credits Ryan’s success to hard work. “Ryan has worked tirelessly to become one of the best high school basketball players in the country. Before coming to Miller, some coaches doubted his ability to play at the Division 1 level. A year later, he’s established himself as a top prospect and the best shooter in high school basketball. His academic commitment has also attracted interest from top basketball programs and prestigious academic institutions, including Harvard University.”
At Miller School, Ryan Crotty has found a place to excel both on the court and in the classroom. With the support of dedicated teachers and coaches, Ryan is achieving his goals and making his mark on the school’s history.
