Deep Pockets
The Mavericks charged into the the 2019 season on Thursday, April 4 with a 12-2 win over Fishburne Military Academy. The early season scrimmage provided the players and coaches an opportunity to evaluate their strengths. In their first game, the defense demonstrated its talent and depth.
After the game, Hall-of-Fame Lacrosse coach, David Riddick, commented: “The defense played well especially Kevin Cheely. Kevin's stickwork has improved considerably, and he was very successful in clearing the ball. JT Fleet who just begun playing lacrosse this year played well at the long stick middle-fielder position.
In addition to solid defensive play, the Mavericks offense was able to put the ball in the net. In the first half, it scored eight goals.
Riddick remarked: “JP Dorion and Ryan Shifflett dominated the faceoffs. JP Dorion, JC Jenkins, and Morgan Parsons led the offense. Miller was ahead 8-0 at halftime.”
In addition to Dave Riddick, the Mavericks welcomed new Head Coach, Ned Dressel, this season. Dressel played college lacrosse at Salisbury University and is a Level 1 Certified US Lacrosse Coach. He brings with him a half decade of coaching experience and a high level of motivation to grow the MSA lacrosse program.
The season looks bright for the Mavericks—the combination of great coaches and an experienced roster puts the team in position for its best year on the field.
