Proposal on the Hill
For Valentine’s Day, we look back to the memorable engagement of Gui and Anna Guimaraes (‘14) in 2019. They were married under the giant oak tree in front of Old Main later that year.
MSA alumni who grew up in the 1980s will have no trouble recalling an iconic scene at the end of the movie SAY ANYTHING…, when the character played by John Cusack held a boombox above his head outside his girlfriend’s bedroom window to express his love for her. Plays, movies, and TV shows have long offered us models for romantic proposals and tear-jerking professions of love. From Romeo’s, “But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?” in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to Dorothy’s “you had me at hello” in response to Jerry Maguire’s long-winded speech in Jerry Maguire, actors have been able to capture what we all dream love and romance has the potential to be. But most of us think this sort of thing happens only in the movies.
On Friday, January 25 MSA alumni Gui Guimaraes (’14) and Anna Breeding (’14) proved that moments like these can happen in real life at Miller School of Albemarle, too. The couple got engaged on Friday in a dramatic fashion that would give even John Cusack a run for his money.
With the assistance of MSA’s Alumni Relations Coordinator, Patton Usry (’09), Gui proposed to Anna by recreating the way he asked her to their senior prom. The spectacle included music, a giant sign, gazing out a window of Old Main, and commandeering a classroom. Who ever said: “What’s love got to do with it?"
