Mavericks Defeat Blue Ridge School

Alumni Gym was standing-room only on Tuesday night. With a snowstorm in the forecast and a ten-game cold streak against the Blue Ridge Barons, the MSA boys basketball team was eager to heat things up in the gym. They did just that.

Aundre Hyatt was on fire behind the 3-point line and put up 28 points. Deshaun Wade set the tone for MSA on defense. He defended BRS's top shooter and kept him to 14 points. Showing great endurance, Wade still had the energy to score 18 points himself. Additionally, Dae Dae Heard and Tariq Balogun each had 13 points.

The team had the encouragement of nearly the entire student body, which dressed in uniform red, white, and ...NO BLUE outfits to show spirit.

I’m glad the guys got to reap the fruits of their labor. We have to keep our nose to the ground and know that it’s going to be a dogfight at their place.

Coach Danny Manual (class of '06) earned his first win against the cross-town rival BRS. He gave all the credit to the work ethic of his players: "I’m glad the guys got to reap the fruits of their labor. We have to keep our nose to the ground and know that it’s going to be a dogfight at their place." He then smiled and quietly stated with chuckle, " it's like a 1,000-pound silverback gorilla off my back."

The game was one of the best games of the season with excellent play by both Blue Ridge and MSA. Students cheered with enthusiasm that electrified the gym and elevated their classmates on the court.
