I’m a native Virginian who has attended and worked in private schools all my life. I spent four
years as a boarding student at Christchurch School, attended Tulane University as an
undergraduate, and have done graduate work at both Virginia Tech and the University of
Virginia, where I earned my PhD. My dissertation concerns Miller’s first Headmaster Charles
Vawter, nineteenth century Progressive Education, and race relations.
Professionally, I’ve been a classroom teacher, department chair, and have served in various
administrative positions. I’ve worked at Miller since 2006 as Director of College Placement and
for many years as Director of the Duty Teams. I’ve also served on numerous administrative
committees. What has consistently kept me in secondary education is the joy of working with
adolescents, the camaraderie of my fellow educators, and the magic of independent schools.
Prior to Miller, I worked at North Cross School in Roanoke for twenty-seven years, where I was
both the founder of their cross-country program and the school’s first Dean of Students, a
position I held for 13 years. In 1998 I took a leave of absence from North Cross and worked as a
visiting administrator at the International School of Panama. It was an adventure; we packed up,
rented an apartment, and spent eight months abroad – an experience which enabled both of our
daughters to become fluent in Spanish.
Personally, along with my wife Bridget, we’ve owned and operated a restaurant and special
events business in Roanoke since 1979. We’ve also built four houses and three commercial
properties - doing much of the work ourselves. Today, Bridget and I live near Miller in western
Albemarle on a small farm where we grow vegetables, blueberries, and other fruits, and keep
several hives of honeybees. Both of our daughters are grown and we’re proud of their
development. Our oldest, Laura, works as a major gifts officer for the environment organization
Nature and Culture International, an organization doing great work both persevering the Amazon
Rain Forest and the native people’s way of life. Out youngest, Maggie, works as an investment
advisor for the Swiss banking firm UBS. We also have a wonderful little SchipperPom dog
Buddy who spends a lot of time at Miller!
