Russell spent his childhood split between the suburbs of Richmond, Virginia and the urban center of Kiev, Ukraine. Living overseas had a profound impact on him, providing him with a unique worldview and appreciation for global cultures. He spent his childhood years in a variety of school settings, including public, private and international, and he appreciated the different aspects of each type of environment. He is also a fluent Russian speaker and lover of European culture and ways of living.
Russell attended James Madison University, pursuing a degree in Political Science, with a minor in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences. His studies included everything from international relations, US elections, political philosophy, developmental psychology, ethics, etc. He spent an additional year at JMU to earn his Master’s Degree in the Art of Teaching.
After graduating in 2013, Russell went to work in the Virginia Public School System. In 2015, Russell joined the faculty here at the Miller School of Albemarle, where he finds the depth of engagement available with students through classes, sports and boarding school living to be rewarding and crucial to the educational experience. Russell teaches a variety of courses including: Political Philosophy, Economics, Comparative Politics and Geography. In addition, he is the coordinator of the Humanities Program.
Russell and his wife live on Miller’s campus with their daughter, Evelynn, and their dog Barkley. They enjoy walking through the meadows together and taking in the beautiful scenery of campus.
