Technology  Q & A for 2016 – 2017

What type of computer should I purchase?

Laptops are recommended. We do not require any specific brand, but we do endorse the use of Apple computers. For a Windows based PC ‘s we recommend Windows 7 thru 10. We DO NOT support or recommend Windows XP or Windows Vista  because Microsoft XP & Vista are no longer provided with security updates for these operating systems.

What software do I need?

Microsoft Office is our preferred application package but not required. MSA now provides Google Docs Apps at no cost to the students.

A printer is recommended, but not required. There are public printers available at various locations on campus.

Where to purchase?

Miller School does not require any specific vendors or brands of computers. We recommend that you purchase a computer from whichever source provides you with the best value and the best support.

PLEASE DO NOT BRING:

Wireless routers, Hotspots, or phone service appliances such as (Vonage or Magicjack). These items are prohibited on campus.

What I need to do to connect to the Wifi network?

Wireless access for laptops is available in various locations on campus and dorms, but must be registered with the Technology Office for access.

Day & Boarding students primarily connect to our network via wireless connection.  Boarding students can use a Ethernet port connection with a cat5 patch cable located in each student assigned dorm desk area.

We encourage you to purchase your own USB ethernet port adaptor for computers that do not have an onboard ethernet port before you arrive on campus or from the school store.

Student network connections will NOT be activated until the student’s computer has been registered by the Technology Staff and the INTERNET LOG-ON form has been signed and submitted to the helpdesk.

Computer Assistance?

The technology department will provide network support. We will offer minimal repair services onsite. We will refer to a local certified engineers in the area to handle major repairs at the owners expense.

Please bring your computer to school in proper working order, complete with the computers operating system software installed and antivirus software installed and up-to-date.

NO COMPUTERS OTHER DEVICES WILL BE ALLOWED ACCESS TO THE STUDENT NETWORK WITHOUT ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE INSTALLED AND UP-TO-DATE & ALL OTHER REQUIREMENTS HAVE BEEN MET.

What about cell phones or Landline Phones?

We allow students to use cell phones on campus after school hours. We have found that VerizonWireless provides the strongest local reception on our campus.

Each dorm has wall installed landline phones to be used by the boarding students. The phones will allow the students to call anywhere in the USA for free. If student is required to make calls outside the US, we encourage the student obtain a calling card for his or her country of origin.
