Special Events

Opening Weekend – The first weekend of school is a “closed” weekend, meaning all boarders (both 5 and 7-day) are encouraged to stay on campus and enjoy an entertaining schedule of activities.

Parents Weekend – Every year in late September or early October, parents are invited to visit MSA for a full program of events that include parent-teacher conferences, information sessions, presentations, performances, and athletic contests.

Headmaster Dinners – Headmaster Dinners are held on the last Wednesday of each month.  Both boarders and day students are invited to attend.  This is an opportunity for students to dress up (coat and tie, dress or dress slacks), enjoy a delicious meal together, and experience an engaging program.  Past programs have ranged from a Q&A with US Road Cycling Champion Ben King and pro cyclists Andrea Dvorak and Andy Guptill to a lecture on “Who Wrote Shakespeare’s Plays” from UVA’s Clifton Waller Barrett Professor of English Paul Cantor.

Fall, Winter, and Spring Awards Ceremonies – At the end of each athletic season, students, faculty, and parents gather for an Awards Ceremony honoring outstanding performance in the classroom and on the playing field.  Academic awards are given to those students who have achieved Honors and High Honors for the grading period, and athletic awards include MVP, most improved, and Coaches Award.

Spirit Week – Organized each spring by the Student Government Association (SGA), Spirit Week allows students to show their spirit by dressing up for five themed days.  Frequent themes include twin day, wacky tacky day, pajama day, and Blue & Green Spirit day, but there is always something new in the mix.

Spring Honors – Spring Honors is a celebration of student talent and achievement.  Instead of classes during the morning, students attend the Spring Honors Program where students who have signed up in advance display their unique abilities through various competitions involving academics and the arts.  Spring Honors competitions include public speaking, creative and analytical writing and research papers, photography, music (vocal and instrumental), and a Spelling Bee.  Parents are invited to attend this inspiring celebration!

Junior/Senior Dinner Dance (Prom) – Each spring in early May, the Parents Auxiliary and the SGA host a special dinner dance at the Keswick Hunt Club for juniors and seniors.

School-wide Awards Ceremony – At the end of the school year, a special awards assembly is held to honor students.  This assembly includes academic awards as well as special achievement awards for character, good citizenship, service, and other admirable traits. Parents and family members are encouraged to attend.

Graduation – Graduation at MSA is a memorable affair.  Senior girls wear white dresses, and senior boys wear navy coats, ties, and khaki pants.  Instead of a traditional commencement address, the Headmaster shares remarks about each graduating senior.  Graduation is held outside under a tent brought in for the occasion.
