Senior Speaks Before the General Assembly

JASMINE2Recently, senior Jasmine Johnson spoke to the Virginia General Assembly as a representative of the 4-H program which she has been a member of for eleven years. She first joined when she was seven years old and went away to summer camp. Jasmine says that 4-H has helped to her realize her full potential, competing at county, district and state fairs. She has placed 1st in many photo competitions, and taken part on a national cooking team that placed 4th nationally in Dallas, Texas.

“4-H has has helped me grow socially, I’m not afraid to talk in front of 300 people. I have also made connections around Virginia and the United States. I’ve met with the President of Virginia State University along with the Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry, Basil L. Gooden. I’ve learned proper outreach skills, organization, and leadership skills.

“As a cabinet member I am Central District Ambassador along with Reporter Historian. Those titles mean that I represent all of Central District in the state of Virginia when I speak to large groups along with the main head of 4-H. The Reporter Historian keeps up with media, trends, and making sure that all the latest 4-H info is out for the world.

“In my role as Central District Ambassador, I met with about 7 Senators and a few delegates to talk about the evolution of 4-H, how it impacted those in my community and around the Commonwealth, and about 4-H in my personal life. I talked about how I’m on a Nationally Ranked Food Challenge team, Creating S.T.E.M clubs in my county and “Making the Best Better.”
