Varsity Baseball

The Miller School of Albemarle, with its unique emphasis on minds, hands, and hearts, seeks to prepare young women and men for success in college and in life. Likewise, the baseball program at Miller places a strong emphasis on developing the mind, making good, informed baseball decisions, the hands, the physical skills of throwing, catching, hitting, fielding, and running, and the heart, inspiring players to play with passion, confidence, pride, commitment, and integrity. While each of these is important on its own, when fostered together, they enable the game of baseball to be played well. At its heart, Miller’s baseball program is about development, preparing young men to play college baseball and beyond; but, just as important, it seeks to develop thoughtful, disciplined, considerate, and successful young men.

“Focus, drive, and passion for excellence are what attracted me to Miller because I love the kid who isn’t afraid to achieve life’s riches through hard work!”

Billy Wagner, Head Baseball Coach

Head Coach: Billy Wagner

Billy Wagner is a former left-handed Major League Baseball pitcher. One of the most unique pitchers in the history of baseball, he combined a deceptive delivery with a 95-100 MPH fastball. He pitched for the Houston Astros (1995–2003), the Philadelphia Phillies (2004–2005), the New York Mets (2006–2009), the Boston Red Sox (2009), and the Atlanta Braves (2010). His career highlights include being named the National League Rolaids Relief Man of the Year in 1999, and making the National League All Star roster seven times. Playing for the Atlanta Braves on June 25, 2010, Billy earned his 400th Career Save, making him just the 5th player in baseball history to reach this plateau. Billy retired after the 2010 baseball season and in 2013 was named Varsity Baseball Coach at the Miller School of Albemarle in Charlottesville, VA.

Assistant Coach: John Lewellen

John has served as an educator, trainer, coach and minister. Over the past few years, he has been coaching with and assisting Billy Wagner with local travel baseball teams and the Miller School team. John played 2nd base in college and works closely with infielders and hitters in the Miller School baseball program. He has extensive experience assisting college and professional athletes in the areas of physical and technical training. In addition to his baseball duties, he works as a voluntary coach with the UVA women’s golf team, where his wife, Kim Lewellen, is the head coach. John holds a BS from Liberty University, MATS from Reformed Theological Seminary, MTh from Duke University and participated in PhD studies at the University of Edinburgh. John has spent most of career serving as a minister in the Episcopal and Anglican Church.

Assistant Coach: Tom Pallante

Tom Pallante started teaching and coaching baseball as an assistant at Miller School in 2008.  Tom worked with the outfielders 2008-12 before joining Billy Wagner and  John Lewellen’s coaching staff in 2013.  Recently, Tom has taken on the head coaching position of the Junior Varsity program.  Tom earned his B.A. in Studio Art at The College of Wooster and his M.F.A. at Radford University.  Tom, wife Jayme and two kids, Lily and Ty live at Miller and enjoy the vast landscape and having the newly renovated baseball field.
