KKW_7601With our school-wide Shakespeare unit in full swing, all students memorized and recited a monologue of their choice during classroom competitions held this and last week. On Friday, January 27, the finalists met on stage in the Chapel for a Battle of The Bard!

Congratulations to our winner Maria Nimmo, who gave a flawless rendition of Shylock’s speech from The Merchant of Venice — an ambitious choice, as this is one of Shakespeare’s most renowned monologues. Maria will go on to represent MSA at the regional competition next week, where she will perform on-stage at the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton (home of the American Shakespeare Center). This is Maria’s second year as school champion!

Congratulations also to our runner-up Kevin Cox for his thoughtful portrayal of Portia from The Merchant of Venice, and to our second runner-up Tom Sun, who gave a rousing speech by Hotspur from Henry IV, Part 1.

Congratulations as well to our grade-level finalists, each of whom delivered compelling performances:

Seniors Betsy Fu and Penghui Zhong
Junior Cathy Li
Sophomores Zoe Ding, Marshall Eanes, and Vivian Zhang
Freshmen Jean-Paul Dorion and Brenden Miller
Eighth Graders Javen McBride and Morgan Parsons
The National Shakespeare Competition, in which 15,000 high school students participate annually, is sponsored by the English Speaking Union, a global educational charity.
